On parle un peu moins de lui car les Raptors sont irréguliers mais Scottie Barnes continue de noircir la feuille, match après match, et cette nuit, il a profité de la venue des Knicks pour signer son match le plus complet avec 12 points, 15 rebonds, mais aussi 3 passes, 2 interceptions et 2 contres. Le tout à 50% aux tirs. Et comme le rookie est déjà indispensable, Nick Nurse l’a fait jouer 41 minutes ! Cette fois, il a bluffé tout le monde par son agressivité aux rebonds, mais aussi quelques passes lasers. Comme celle où il trouve Fred Van Vleet à 3-points alors qu’il y avait une forêt de bras devant lui.
« Il voit tout ! » lâche Nick Nurse. « Il va voir les gars qui coupent, puis il pourra faire la feinte de passe, et frapper derrière. Il voit beaucoup de choses, et c’est bien. Je veux toujours qu’il attaque davantage le cercle car une fois qu’il le fera, le jeu de passes sera encore meilleur. »
« Il a un potentiel très, très élevé »
Ce qui impressionne, c’est que Barnes n’était que 6e homme la saison passée à Florida State, et personne ne l’imaginait devenir un cadre aussi vite. Pour Fred VanVleet, son potentiel est incroyable.
« Il a un potentiel très, très élevé » reconnaît le meneur des Raptors. « C’est certainement l’un des défis les plus difficiles que j’ai eus, mais il réalise parfois des actions où l’on distingue sa vision du jeu et son feeling pour le jeu, et ce sont des choses difficiles à enseigner. Il n’y a rien qu’il ne puisse pas faire sur un terrain. »
Comme les meilleurs rookies, Barnes est un éponge, et il accepte que VanVleet s’occupe de lui. « On a de supers discussions » poursuit VanVleet. « Je pense qu’il s’appuie beaucoup sur moi pour apprendre le jeu, et comment ça se joue, et je m’appuie certainement beaucoup sur lui. Il est vraiment, mais vraiment bon pour nous. »
Face aux Knicks, on a vu Barnes se jeter sur des ballons, se frictionner au rebond, mais aussi être le premier sur les contre-attaques. C’est un « energizer » qui ne cherche pas non plus à en faire trop. C’est une sorte de jeune Kawhi Leonard branché sur le 220, et VanVleet prévient qu’il n’a pas intérêt à se relâcher.
« Je suis sur son dos pour qu’il soit un très grand joueur et il s’améliore progressivement. Je pense qu’il va être énorme pour nous à l’avenir« .
