Stay tuned, quoi.

The Boston Celtics have great depth this year
By Jeff Clark on Oct 26, 3:29a

Image

Last year's team just didn't have enough at the end of the year. A similar problem plagued them at the end of the prior two years as well. When you have to exhaust your starters to get them through a grueling regular season and 2 or 3 playoff series battles, you don't leave enough for closing time.

All the pressure was on the starters because the bench was either hurt or simply not very talented on the offensive side of the floor. Enter this year's bench. There's depth and offensive talent all around.

Depth puts Celtics in prime position - BostonHerald.com
But the Celtics, with Danny Ainge’s recent additions, certainly seem to be chasing the Miami model. Including the recuperating Avery Bradley, they go five deep in the backcourt, with Rajon Rondo [stats] the only true point guard in the bunch. They are three deep in all three frontcourt positions as well, with the resurgent Jeff Green shaping up as the ultimate swing forward. Rivers wants to downplay the list of combinations he can now throw onto the floor, but he has to admit that his matchup options are almost endless.

Go right down the roster : Playing alongside or backing up Rondo is a list of 5 combo guards, 3 or 4 of whom could be starting on most teams. Pierce finally has a reliable backup 3 in Green, who is good enough that Doc will need to find ways to use him as a 4 as well. Brandon Bass and Kevin Garnett return as the frontcourt starters for now. But backing them up are Jared Sullinger, Chris Wilcox, and Darko Milicic (a first round steal and two potential bargains at the vet min. each). You can also toss in Jason Collins when you need 6 fouls and a big defensive body.

That's a lot of options for Doc to play with and it will be fascinating to see how he mixes and matches them. I haven't even had time to figure out what Doc plans to do with Barbosa, never mind Avery Bradley when he returns.

Terry, Barbosa have Celtics gazing at seventh heaven - Celtics - Boston.com
"Adding Barbosa made a deep bench even deeper," said Terry. "Not only are we deep, but we’re very explosive and we are going to look to outscore everyone’s bench this season, every time we step out on the floor. "We have the deepest bench in basketball. The Clippers might have something to say about that, but it’s us in this locker room. Our mission every night is to go out and outwork and outscore every other bench."

Considering how the bench offense looked last year, that would be something to write home about.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason Terry: "we're the best pick-setting team in the league"
By wjsy on Oct 26, 2:36p

Image

During this training camp, the Celtics have put an emphasis on pick-setting, a part of the game that is usually overlooked and vastly underappreciated.

There's some really good insight in Marc D'Amico's article on Celtics.com about an unsung part of the game that really hasn't been talked about this training camp: pick setting.

"This is maybe the best pick-setting team," Doc Rivers said while comparing this team to the other eight he has coached in Boston. "Darko (Milicic) loves to pick. Kevin (Garnett) is the best picker in the league. Jared (Sullinger) is a good picker."

The list goes on and on, and it doesn't stop where you think it would. The Celtics even have great pickers playing in the backcourt thanks to the presence of new additions Jason Terry and Courtney Lee. Terry, in particular, has stood out to Rivers during the last month of practice.

"JET, surprisingly, if (he's) not the best picker on the team, he's right there with Kevin," Rivers said of Terry. "He's a small, but he loves setting picks. That's what he did in Dallas with Nowitzki, so we're going to do it here for him."

As Wilcox and Terry point out later in the article, setting a good pick is all about sacrificing your body for your teammate so he can do his thing. The roster is chockful of talented offensive players, but that will matter very little if they can't get freed up for open shots. A good pick also lessens the pressure for individuals to work one-on-one with their defender. The Celtics have put an emphasis on this particular skill in the preseason and with the best X's and O's coach in the league, it'll lend itself to a more fluid and versatile offense.

Cuban says no final decision, Delonte West could return to Mavs | ProBasketballTalk
But owner Marc Cuban told the Dallas Morning News no decision on West’s future with the team. "No decisions have been made one way or another; otherwise we would have made it," Cuban said, adding, "It’s just a process that’s pretty much down to me making a decision."

Inside the mind of Jason Terry
By Jeff Clark on Oct 27, 7:58p

Image

He's still new to us here in Boston, so here are a few peaks into the mindset of our new super-sub.

Jason Terry is a very good basketball player and he's going to help the Celtics a lot on the court. But his presence is going to matter off the court as well. He's a respected and well liked veteran with an irrepressible exuberance and infectious positive spirit.

He's still new to us here in Boston, so here are a few peaks into the mindset of our new super-sub.
As you might have heard, Terry got a tattoo of Lucky spinning the Larry O'Brien trophy on his arm. Here's some more about that story.

Inside the NBA preseason with Jason Terry and the Boston Celtics - Grantland
"I came in early," he says, by way of explanation. "I've been here since September 4. I'd come in at night and get tons of shots up. And just coming in here and looking at all the banners — it makes your blood boil. I was just like, 'Man, with this team — I know we gonna win it. I just know." So, while celebrating his 10-year wedding anniversary with his wife in Hawaii, Terry made a pit stop at a tattoo parlor. "I was like, 'Yeah, let me go ahead and get this Celtics guy tattooed on.'"
"I'm not a psychic. I'm not a prophet. But I'm a big faith-fearing guy, and in my faith, sometimes, you have to speak what you believe, and it will come true. So, yeah, I have no hesitation in telling you that our mission is to kill whoever we step on the court against."

Doc, being the magician-motivator that he is, challenged this old dog to learn some new tricks.

Terry meets challenge - BostonHerald.com
"What Doc told me before I came here was, ‘Do something different. Change your habit.' And my habit coming to this team was I hated practice. I've grown to love it over the last month. It's challenging, it's competitive and it brings out the best in you every day."

I'm personally really excited about seeing this guy play for the Celtics. He's just got a certain charisma that I think is going to play exceedingly well on this team. Ready for takeoff.
