Bobcats-Magic Preview

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD (STATS Writer) | The Associated Press – Thu, Jan 17, 2013 4:15 PM EST
With forward Glen Davis back and a soft portion of their schedule beginning, the Orlando Magic hope to make their recent losing streak a distant memory.
They can start by taking care of business Friday night against the visiting Charlotte Bobcats, who have lost 24 of their last 26 games.
After losing 10 consecutive games, Orlando (14-24) has won two of three with impressive victories over the Los Angeles Clippers and Indiana sandwiched around a 29-point defeat at league-worst Washington.
"We've beaten some good teams this year,'' guard J.J. Redick said after the Magic beat the Central-leading Pacers 97-86 on Wednesday. "And we've been in games against good teams."
The Magic, however, have lost five straight to teams with losing records and can't afford more slip-ups if they hope to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Starting with the Bobcats (9-29), Orlando begins a stretch of five in a row - four at home - against teams well below .500.
Having won 19 of 21 against Charlotte, the Magic appear primed to end their skid against losing teams.
"We're trying to win games," Davis said. "We're behind. We lost a lot of games. We've gotta go and kind of catch back up.''
After the Magic lost 10 of 11 without him, Davis has given Orlando a boost with 24 points over 43 minutes in two games back from a sprained left shoulder.
Nikola Vucevic has been the team's hottest player, though, averaging 15.6 points and 16.1 rebounds while posting eight consecutive double-doubles.
Davis and Vucevic combined for 33 points on 13 of 21 shooting and 17 rebounds in a 107-98 win at Charlotte on Dec. 15. The Magic are likely to look inside again after finishing with 60 points in the paint while shooting a season-high 54.4 percent in that victory.
Charlotte was outscored 52-22 in the paint Tuesday against the Pacers in a 103-76 loss, its fifth straight, and was outrebounded 60-31 - the largest differential in franchise history.
The Bobcats have been outrebounded by 11.2 per game during their latest skid as they continue to play without leading rebounder Byron Mullens (sprained ankle).
"I don't remember us having a game like that where we got outrebounded that bad,'' guard Ben Gordon said. "I think there are a lot of times where we put teams on their heels when we have (our) guards out there. We just need to continue to use that to our strength."
Leading scorer Kemba Walker (17.3 points per game) scored a career-high 32 in the first meeting against the Magic, but he's averaged 13.6 in his last 10 games.
The Bobcats have failed to score more than 90 points in each of their last four, averaging 82.8 points during that stretch.
They'll try to break through against an Orlando team that has given up 109.0 points per game while allowing eight of its last 10 opponents to reach 100.
Charlotte has been held to 86.8 points per game while losing 15 of 16 in Orlando.

ORLANDO, Fla. By Rick Bonnell - http://www.charlotteobserver.com

This was sort of the co-captain buddy system: What Gerald Henderson started, Kemba Walker finished.
The Charlotte Bobcats wouldn’t have beaten the Orlando Magic on Friday 106-100 had shooting guard Henderson not posted up all first half for 17 points. But this came with a cost: on the first play of the game Henderson’s back locked up, and by the third quarter he was on the bench strapped to a heat pad.
Enter Walker, the second-year point guard, who filled in the rest by finishing with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists. In particular, Walker hit three free throws in the last minute after the Magic had closed a 13-point deficit to four on two particularly ill-timed Charlotte fouls.
First, rookie Jeff Taylor fouled Magic point guard Jameer Nelson, allowing Nelson to score two free throws without using up possession time. Then, veteran center Brendan Haywood was called for an offensive foul – an illegal screen set on Nelson – to change possession with 58 seconds left.
Magic guard Arron Afflalo drove the lane on the ensuing possession. Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions blocked Afflalo’s shot, and Afflalo was incensed a foul wasn’t called. So much so that Afflalo was called for a technical foul.
Walker hit the free throw, then grabbed an offensive rebound off a miss by teammate Hakim Warrick. Two more free throws, off a foul by Orlando’s E’Twaun Moore, and Walker had iced the Bobcats’ 10th victory (against 29 losses).
The Bobcats want Walker to feel comfortable as a leader. Friday felt like a big step.
“I embrace that,’’ Walker said post-game, his sprained left ankle wrapped in ice. “The older guys here have given me that opportunity.’’
He shares that mantle with Henderson, who made 8-of-10 first-half shots before being limited to three second-half minutes.
The Bobcats don’t have high-quality post-up players among their big men, so the best options are shooting guard Henderson and rookie small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap saw a mismatch entering this game, so he told Henderson in advance he’d be posting up a lot versus the Magic.
It worked to a charm, setting up both Henderson’s back-to-the-basket game and his fadeaway jump shots.
“It takes away a lot of (the opponent’s defensive) help,’’ Henderson said of the post-up plays. “You leave me by myself and I feel I can elevate and shoot.’’
That was certainly true until his back gave out. Then it became Walker’s show.
And now the Bobcats return home to play the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night. They haven’t won in Time Warner Cable Arena since Nov. 21.

With the New Orleans Hornets announcing Thursday afternoon they’ll change their nickname to the Pelicans, the Charlotte Bobcats face this question:
Would adopting “Hornets,” the nickname first associated with NBA basketball in Charlotte, drive up sales of game tickets and team merchandise?
The Bobcats are already engaged in market research to find out. They’ve hired Harris Interactive, a nationally prominent polling company, to survey both current Bobcats customers and the general Charlotte sports market about a possible change.
The Observer obtained a copy of the survey Harris emailed to various Bobcats season-ticket holders Wednesday. The electronic survey takes about 30 minutes to fill out, and asks all sorts of questions about the Bobcats, the Hornets and the general perception of what would sell more game tickets and team gear.
One question, about halfway through Harris’ survey, is the crux of the issue:
“If the Bobcats were to change their nickname to the ‘Hornets,’ would you attend more games than you currently do, attend fewer games, or attend about the same amount?”
The Bobcats aren’t commenting on the situation in New Orleans, since the name change won’t become official until a Thursday afternoon news conference. However, an NBA source confirmed to the Observer Tuesday night that Hornets owner Tom Benson has been given permission to switch the nickname to the Pelicans, an iconic bird in the state of Louisiana.
A grassroots effort called “Bring Back the Buzz” has lobbied for a name change from Bobcats to Hornets for over a year. Several hundred members of that group attended Saturday’s home loss to the Sacramento Kings.
Sitting mostly in the upper deck, they wore Hornets teal-and-purple merchandise and occasionally chanted “Charlotte Hornets’’ during the game.
That group was heartened when Benson, who also owns the NFL New Orleans Saints, said he wanted a nickname more associated with Louisiana.
The Hornets name is seemingly now available. NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said in April that if the Bobcats want the Hornets name, “it’s something we would clearly look at.” Silver added that a switch would be relatively simple since the league already owns all the trademarks.
Bobcats president Fred Whitfield told The Observer last month that a name change would cost the team at least $3 million to implement. Whitfield added that the team’s current stakeholders – season-ticket holders, sponsors and suite-holders – would have a big voice in any decision.
“Some of them have invested in us for nine years as Bobcats fans,” Whitfield said.
The issue isn’t just whether “Bobcats” or “Hornets” is more appealing to the Charlotte public. It’s whether a name change would actually drive sales of tickets, merchandise and general interest in this team.
Or as one item on the Bobcats’ survey posed, “When you think of the team nickname ‘Hornets,’ what comes to mind?”
That is the $3 million question.
